Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s first presidential election campaign rally, got underway in Kandy on Monday. Maithripala Sirisena and representatives of political parties that have pledged their support to him, were present at the occasion.

At this event, the symbol of the swan under which the common opposition candidate would be contesting was pinned on Maithripala Sirisena.

Former Minister Navin Dissanayake who gave up his ministerial portfolio to support the common candidate addressing the masses stated that he decided to cross over to bring about a true change for the people of this country. He also stated that the next three generations of this country will have to pay for the wasteful spending of the current administration.

JHU General Secretary, Patali Champika Ranawaka who also stepped down from his ministerial portfolio stated that they lifted Mahinda Rajapaksa to the presidency in 2005 when neither his party nor his brothers backed him and likewise they will remove him from power on January 8.

UNP deputy leader, MP Sajith Premadasa who took to the stage in Kandy, reminded the public that his father former  president Ranasinghe Premadasa, also began his bid for the presidency from Kandy, adding that Maithripala Sirisena would bring about a historic new era in the country following his victory.

Common Opposition Candidate, Maithripala Sirisena addressing the masses made a startling revelation .
Over the past six months, one billion rupees were spent on slinging mud at Ranil Wickremesinghe. CDs were compiled, books were published, films were made. A billion rupees were spent because he said it was Ranil that would contest against him and therefore any mud could be slung at him. A few days before I stepped out, Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing public sector employees at Temple trees said that a presidential election is coming and that he was yet to see who would contest against him. But even as he made this statement, he did not know that the man who would defeat him was at Temple Trees.
