Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena announced on Monday that he would undertake a non-violent election campaign. He made this statement at a media briefing held this afternoon at the Opposition Leader’s Office, following the submission of nominations.
Speaking further, the common candidate stated that it is clear that this election has become a battle between the power of arms and the power of wealth on one side, and the power of the people on the other.
Maithripala Sirisena who submitted his declaration of assets to the Elections Commissioner also stated that anyone is able to go through this declaration. In a symbolic move the former health minister handed over unused petrol coupons worth over 1.03 million rupees to the Ministry of Health during the media briefing held on Monday.
Speaking at the event leader of the Democratic Party Sarath Fonseka stated that he is ashamed of personalities within his party and the UNP who betrayed the party for money.
Following the conclusion of the media briefing, UNP parliamentarian Chandrani Bandara denied rumours that she was planning to cross over to the government.
