Speaking at a public rally held in Kurunegala on Sunday, Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that if the government truly wishes to abolish the executive presidency, he would support such an endeavour.
The UNP Kurunegala District Council Meeting was held on Sunday morning under the patronage of Ranil Wickremesinghe.
Speaking at the event, the Opposition Leader expressed the following views:
“Mahinda Rajapaksa won after striking an agreement with Prabhakaran. By preventing voters from voting. Afterwards he went to war and began increasing his powers saying he would return those powers after the war. What did he do after the war? He imprisoned Sarath Fonseka who stood against him. He took away media freedom. He removed the Chief Justice from her position. He tried to break our party, but it did not work. He broke all the other parties.”
He added; “President Mahinda Rajapaksa had said that no one assisted him to abolish the Executive Presidency. This talk is coming in the face of defeat. I say that I will accept this challenge. If you need help, then I noted in parliament, that the UNP would support a 19th Amendment to the constitution. I am still of that stance. Convene the cabinet tomorrow morning. Adopt it as an emergency bill and refer it to the courts. Convene parliament on Monday. We are ready to adopt it without a debate. It is in your hands now. I make this statement in public.”
