Operations have commenced to clear the Kandy – Mahinyanganaya Main Road which was blocked owing to a landslide which occurred on Sunday night.
Our correspondent says that vehicular travel along this route has come to a standstill. The Kandy- Mahinyangana Road still remains blocked as a result of landslides which occurred on Sunday night.
Police Media Spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana noted that motorists are advised to use alternative routes until further notice. A driver of a bus had sustained injuries in the incident.
Our correspondent noted that passengers who were travelling in the bus at the time were severely inconvenienced as a result.
Meanwhile, the Sumanathissa Village in Badulla was inundated owing to the overflowing of the Badulu Oya. According, to our correspondent, more than 20 houses were inundated as a result.
Upon instructions issued by the Divisional Secretary, measures have been taken to relocate the displaced to safer locations.
Meanwhile, the NBRO noted that 28 schools are located in landslide prone areas.
Senior Geologist of Landslide Monitoring and Warning Unit of the DMC, Dr. Gamini Jayathissa noted that 18 schools from the Kandy District have been identified as landslide-prone areas.
