Sarath Fonseka, the Leader of the Democratic Party stated that he will lodge a complaint with the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, regarding his disenfranchisement.

Sarath Fonseka said:
The Elections Commissioner has said that it has been decided to take away my right to vote. He says that a special team appointed from the Attorney General’s Department conducted an inquiry and reached this decision and have now informed the Elections Commissioner.

My name was on the Electoral List in the recent past. It was in the 2013 List and until last month, it was in the 2014 List that had been published. It is against this backdrop that this action has been taken.

In truth, it was the Elections Commissioner himself that notified me that my name was in the 2013 List. He showed us the constitution and explained the matter to us. A month before the Western Province Election it was the same Elections Commissioner that informed me that I still had the right to vote since I had not served out the entire prison term.
He added;
The last letter that the former Attorney General signed prior to his departure was the letter stripping me of the right to vote. When they think of a Presidential Election, the very next thing that comes to their minds is me. Even if I do not contest the election there are people in our party who can vote and who can obtain the blessings of the people of this country.

If the need arises, and if we so decide, we can put forward an equal candidate for a presidential election. We will remove hundreds of thousands of votes from this ruler. We will not look up and sit idle just because our civil rights are taken away. I will definitely go to court but I will have to decide on when I will go to court. It is difficult to think that I will receive justice from the courts in the present situation. I will take this matter internationally and I will definitely take it to the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva.
