The army says that the cause for the fire that was reported from the explosives warehouse at the Mattegoda army camp can only be determined once the report from the Government Analyst comes through.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake said that investigations into the incident have commenced. The field engineers camp complex of the 5th Engineering Regiment is located in an urban area in Mattegoda.

The camp is bordered to the Mattegoda Housing Complex on one side and villages on the other side. Locals in the area said that they heard a loud explosion from the direction of the army camp at around 7 on Thursday morning.

Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake said: “Because all the equipment were stored in a safe manner no one in the army camp or in the surrounding areas was injured…”
