A group of UNP representatives met with Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya on Wednesday.
The meeting, which was held at the Elections Secretariat, was attended by UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake, UNP Assistant Leader Ravi Karunanayake, Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya and MP Joseph Michael Perera.
UNP General Secretary, MP Tissa Attanayake expressed the following views:
We asked the Elections Commissioner to take steps immediately to ensure that public officials are not used for election campaigning. The second request that we made is that international observers be called in from the day that the date of the election is announced. There must be a specific amount of time between the presidential election and the announcement; and we told him that we need at least 45 days for our campaign. This is because the government could attempt to use state resources and state media and hold a rushed election.
