President Mahinda Rajapaksa will leave to the Vatican on an official tour on Thursday. The aim of the visit is to officially invite His Holiness Pope Francis to tour Sri Lanka in January.

The delegation that will accompany the President to the Vatican also includes Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunge. During a media briefing held on Wednesday, UNP MP John Amaratunge commented thus:
I was invited to be a part of the delegation to officially invite the holy father to Sri Lanka. When I got the invitation I presented it to my leader and after thinking about it he granted approval. Approval was given to take part in a religious capacity. We agreed to to this for the entire Catholic community in Sri Lanka. The public should be aware of this because this is not a move which will signal a cross over or that I support the President.
