VAT Fraud Case: Sentences handed down to defendants who absconded court

Twenty year prison sentences were handed to all eight respondent who were absconding court proceedings in the Rs.3.99 billion VAT fraud case.

Justice Kumudini Wickramasinghe also ordered that in addition to the prison sentence, a fine amounting to three times the embezzled amount be fined. The eight defendants had absconded proceedings from the beginning of the case.

Six out of the fourteen defendants charged, had been present in court.

Prison sentences and fines were handed down to the six respondents who appeared in court at previous hearings.
