Election observers say that a stock of goods which was taken into police custody while being taken to be illegally distributed among voters have been allegedly released by the OIC of the Haputale Police Station.
A tractor which was also taken into police custody along with the goods is also said to have been allegedly released by the OIC
Executive Director of the CaFFE organisation, Keerthi Tennekoon said that noodles, rice, sugar and dhal which belong to the Haldummulla Pradeshiya Sabha were being taken in the tractor to be distributed among selected voters.
He pointed out that this is a violation of the Elections Act.
Keerthi Tennekoon further said that residents themselves have handed over the goods and the tractor to the police.The CaFFE organisation says that the police have taken steps to release the goods and the tractor in the presence of residents, election observers and opposition candidates.
Responding to the charges, Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that an investigation will be launched into the incident
