Several JVP supporters and offices in the Monaragala District have been attacked.
Our reporter at the News1st Election Bureau in Uva said: “The first of the series of attacks was reported early this morning in the Kumbukkana area in Monaragala. Within a short time-frame two JVP offices in Kumarapura and Hulandawa in Monaragala, were also attacked.”
A group of JVP supporters who were decorating for a rally that was to be held under the auspices of JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake in the Badalkumbura town, were attacked shortly after midnight.
The JVP says that the attack was carried out by persons who arrived at the location at about 12:30 a.m. in several vehicles.
Notably, the attack took place in close proximity to the Badalkumbura Police Station. News1st’s Rajitha Wijeytunge who arrived at the scene shortly after the attack said the JVP members had fled for their safety. The News1st team came across JVP Monaragala District Group Leader R.M. Jayewardane a short while later.
He expressed following views:
“The were driving on the wrong side of the road and attempted to run over our people. One vehicle sped away. The other vehicle stopped and those inside began attacking our supporters. Our supporters used the flag and whatever they had in their hands to defend themselves.”
News1st also asked questions about the shots that were fired .
Question: They allege that there were shots fired in the air. What are your views on this?
In reply, Jayewardane said: “It was they who carried out the shooting. A black Defender jeep came there during the incident. Prior to that another group arrived there in a car and on several bicycles. A group had gathered even before the incident. It was after the car and the bicycles arrived that they started to attack us. They broke into the premises where we were legitimately holding a rally.”
Our reporter notes that the stage where the JVP rally was to be held and the UPFA office in the area are spaced about 100 metres apart.
UPFA supporters note that the JVP members had attacked their office.
Chairman of Badalkumbura Pradeshiya Sabha, Samarasinghe Abeysekera said: “About 125 persons from the JVP group came here, fired shots in the air to frighten us and then smashed the vehicles. We were inside the office. When we came out to see what the noise was, they were tearing down our flags and attacking the office.”
Deputy Chairman of Badalkumbura Pradeshiya S, Kapila Samarakkody also spoke about the incident.
He said; “The candidate and a group of JVP supporters came to our office and attacked it while we were inside. When we came out to see what the noise was they were smashing up two vehicles at the office. When we remained inside, they retreated.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana notes that several persons including two police officers were injured in the altercation.
The JVP office located on Pragathi Mawatha in Sinhagiripura, Kumbukkana, was attacked at about 12:30 a.m. JVP Candidate for Uva PC, P.G. Wijeysiri revealed the following details: “A group of thugs came here in three Defender jeeps and incinerated a cutout of me. At about 2 a.m. about fifty thugs broke down the gate and scaled the wall and stated shooting at my house making death threats.?
A JVP office located in Kumarapura, Moneragala has also been attacked. JVP supporters say the office was attacked at about 3 a.m.
The JVP office in the Hulandawa area was attacked at around 3:15 a.m. on Tuesday.
