Landmark occasion: Colombo’s Floating Market sets sail

Another initiative that promises novel experiences for residents of and visitors to the nation’s capital, was declared open on Monday August 25. The Floating Market was declared open on Monday under the auspices of Minister Maithripala Sirisena.

The Floating Market is a brainchild of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development. Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was among the distinguished gathering that graced the opening of the Floating Market Complex.

The complex located on Bastian Mawatha in Pettah, comprises of 92 trade stalls. Notably, several stalls have been established on boats. The Floating Market which will also serve as a tourist attraction comprises of stalls selling local produce and stalls featuring local handicraft. Labour for this endeavour was provided by the Sri Lanka Army and the Sri Lanka Navy.
