That was Kanishka Gimhan, a student who was supposed to sit for the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination on Sunday.
Although Kanishka’s mother was able to save his life, she and her daughter, Kanishka’s younger sister, were not as lucky.
They passed away after meeting with an accident along Pragathi Mawatha in Kahathuduwa.
For many students around the country, the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination is the first major academic hurdle they face.
Kanishka Gimhan, a Grade 5 student of Olaboduwa Vidyalaya went to visit his teachers on Friday to seek their blessings for examination, he was accompanied by his mother and younger sister.
They were part of a group of four mothers and seven children including four other students who were due to sit for the scholarship examination. After visiting the house of their teachers they set out to go home.
The deceased, thirty seven year old Nirosha Kumari had worked hard to ensure that her two children would be able to lead better lives. Her daughter Kavisha Sewandi was 5 years old .
Kanishka’s sister, Kavisha Sewandi was receiving her education at a pre-school in the Olaboduwa area.
The 4 other students who sustained injuries in the accident have been admitted to the National Hospital as well as the Colombo South Teaching Hospital .
According to the police, the driver of the lorry has been taken into custody and is due to be produced before court .
