President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced on Thursday that Sri Lanka will be providing one million US dollars in financial assistance to Palestine.
President Rajapaksa is the Founder President of the Sri Lanka Committee for Solidarity with Palestine. Earlier in July the President called the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to inquire about the situation in Gaza and offered his condolences to lives that have been lost during the recent conflict.
Sri Lanka, incidentally, recognised Palestine as a state in 1988.
The announcement comes in the wake of a protest in the Maligawatte area on Wednesday against Israel’s continued occupation of Palestinian territories in Gaza and the West Bank and their recent military incursion into Gaza.
