Speaking at a media briefing convened on Wednesday, August 13,  Senior Minister Athauda Seneviratne, commented on the foreign service.

The minister shared the following views:
No matter who is appointed to the foreign service there is always a relative. Isn’t that so? Even if you hold an examination and appoint them, there will be a family member. There will be family members of politicians. There are people who are related to me too, but that is a another matter. It all depends on their qualification and talent. It is people who have political purpose, political vision and who have some sort of feeling for their country that outperform those who are appointed via an examinations and ambassadors who are appointed traditionally and are able to render a better service for the country, for trade and to also stand forward and work towards resolving the national problem. I am not saying we should do away with the examination. It is necessary to appoint persons who have ability, skill and qualification to those positions. There are instances where there are weaknesses in those in the foreign service.
