Development leads to the destruction of the environment. This is an allegation that is commonly heard. However, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital is being developed in a manner which safeguards the environment – a location that you would witness if you would drive along the Sri Lanka – Nippon road from the Parliament roundabout.

This location which is in close proximity to the Diyawanna Oya is rich in biodiversity and is home to both endemic and migratory birds. As this was not a commonly know fact, this location was gradually being destroyed due to human activities such as illegal constructions. However, today the area is being developed in a manner which protects the natural environment and it will also serve to mitigate floods that may occur.

Once declared open, visitors will be able to enter this ecosystem and explore its biodiversity This development will eventually assist those who wish to study this ecosystem as well. An exercise track will also be laid down at this location; one which goes through the Sri Lanka – Nippon road and connects to the Diyatha Uyana located near the Parliament Roundabout. The project, which is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development, once completed, will undoubtedly add beauty to the Kotte area.
