The Sri Lanka Communist Party says that the decision — taken to support the constitutional amendment that allows a president to seek more than two terms in office — was a wrong one.

Senior Minister D.E.W. Gunasekara, General Secretary of the Party, expressed these sentiments during a media briefing held in Colombo on July 21.

The media briefing was held to create awareness on the Communist Party’s twentieth anniversary celebration, which will be held in Ratnapura.

Senior Minister Gunasekara expressed the following views:

“As soon as the war ended and international pressure began to be exerted on the country, that was the time to promote national unity. This was when it was introduced, there were varying views within our party. However, we finally decided to support it. However, before long we understood how this was going to be used and we held a meeting and stated that the decision we took was wrong.”
