The National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) says that three persons die each day due to oral cancer related complications.

Director of NCCP Dr. Nilamani Paranagama stated that on a yearly basis, around 860 oral cancer patients succumb to the illness.

She stated that oral cancer could be prevented by early detection and treatment and added that the public has to be educated on complications related to Oral Cancer.

“First I must say that oral cancer can be prevented if we abandon our bad habits. If we stop habits like chewing tobacco and betel and consuming alcohol, oral cancer can be prevented. The cancer arises as a result of 10-15 years of continuously engaging in such habits. You can consult a doctor, stop these bad habits and take steps to prevent oral cancer.”
