Minister S.B. Dissanayake extended a challenge on Monday while inaugurating a road renovation project in Udunuwara.

The Minister said that the country’s debt burden had reduced in the recent past.

S.B.Dissanayake said: If  I am found wrong, I will step down from my ministerial portfolio and my parliamentary seat. When we toppled the government of Chandrika, the country’s debt was 99 percent of the nation’s income. In 2000, that moved up to 102 percent. The figures reached 104 and 106 percent by 2004.

He added: When Mahinda Rajapaksa took over the nation , the country was in debt which was 106 percent of its income. The plan of the Rajapaksa vision is to reduce it to 65 percent by 2016. That is why we are carrying out large scale development, so that we can rapidly reduce the loans that we take locally and internationally.”
