The Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board W.B. Ganegela says that the third phase of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant will be connected to the national grid by next month.

He pointed out that with the connection of the third phase a total of 300 megawatts will be added to the national grid. Construction activities on two phases of the Norochcholai Power Plant, which comprises of three phases, have already been finished.

The power plant supplies 600mw at present. However, once the third phase of the power plant goes online the plant will produce 900mw of electricity for the national grid.

The chairman of the CEB notes hydro power generation remains low due to low rainfall reported in the catchment areas.

Hydro power remains the most economical means of providing electricity to the country, however when hydro power generation is low the next most economical option would be usage of  the coal power plant.

As of yesterday hydro power generation stood at 24 % of the total demand while thermal power generation account for 36%.
