Sunday marked the final day of the the joint Dengue eradication operation launched in the Western Province by the three armed forces, the police and the Ministry of Health.

Meanwhile, the Colombo Municipal Council says that it will be taking legal action against 908 homeowners for maintaining environments conducive for the breeding of mosquitoes.

A special three-day Dengue eradication operation was launched last Friday to halt the spread of Dengue. Sunday was the third day of the operation, and the Samithipura area in Mattakkuliya was one of the areas that came under inspection.

The operation was launched in the area after it was identified that the area had a high mosquito density. The Ministry of Health said over 71,000 locations were inspected under the programme, while mosquito larvae were discovered from about 1,800 locations.

Meanwhile, 53,300 houses in the Colombo Municipal Council area were also inspected. Newsfirst toured several areas in Colombo and its suburbs and located many mosquito-conducive environments. When we toured the area for the second time on Sunday, they remained uncleaned.

15,184 patients who were suspected to have contracted Dengue were reported during the first six months of this year, while 59.52 percent of this number were reported from the Western Province. 5,648 patients were reported from the Colombo district while 2,368 patients were reported from the Gampaha district. 1,022 patients were reported from the Kalutara district. More than 1,431 patients were reported from the Colombo Municipal Council area while 4,217 were reported from other areas.

There are 47 urban divisions in the Colombo municipal council, of which 21 divisions have been identified as areas prone to Dengue. A majority of these patients are reported from the Kirula and Kirulapone areas. Meanwhile, a Dengue prevention programme was carried out in the Negombo area as well.
