A night of increasing wind speeds and rain – warns Met Department

The Met Department warns that wind speeds off the coast from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Puttalam and Galle could reach between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour in the coming hours, adding that sudden swells could be experienced as a result.

The Met Department also forecasts that wind speeds in shallow and deep seas off the coast of the country could reach upto 80 kilometers per hour and warns seafarers to exercise caution.

The Department is also forecasting intermittent showers or thundershowers in the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts, with certain areas receiving in excess of 75 milimetres of rain.

Intermittent thundershowers may also be experienced in the evening in the Uva, North Central and Eastern Provinces and the Met Department calls on the public to take adequate precautions to prevent lightning-related accidents.

Meanwhile, on Monday our camera captured footage of the clean up operation underway in homes that were affected by the recent flooding and landslides in the Kalutara District.
