Former India fast bowler Yograj Singh, the father of India’s 2011 World Cup-winning star all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, is undergoing treatment in the United States for cancer in the vocal chords. Yuvraj himself suffered from a rare germ cell cancer but recovered to play for India again. In the recently concluded Indian Premier League, Yuvraj was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore for a record Rs 14 crore.
According to a report in the Indian Express, the 56-year-old Yograj, once spoken in the same breath as India’s greatest all-rounder Kapil Dev, has undergone surgery to remove a throat tumor in a US-based hospital. The cancer in Yograj’s vocal chords was diagnosed a few months back.
It was on Yuvraj’s suggestion that Yograj was taken to the US to undergo treatment. The newspaper quotes Yograj’s wife Satveer saying: “He would often complain about throat pain and cough. But he never let us know what was going on. He would take medicines and be fine for a while, but when the problem got worse, he had to tell us.”
Family sources said Yograj was recovering well after the tumor was removed three weeks ago. Both Satveer and Yuvraj have been in touch with the former cricketer, who has also acted in films like the Bollywood blockbuster Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.
Yograj married Satveer after divorcing his first wife Shabnam Singh, Yuvraj’s mother. Soon after the 2011 World Cup, Yuvraj was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left lung and underwent chemotherapy treatment in Boston and Indianapolis.
In April 2012, Yuvraj returned to India almost fully cured. After weeks of intense training, the left-handed all-rounder made his international comeback in a Twenty20 match in September against New Zealand shortly before the 2012 World Twenty20. Yograj played one Test and six ODIs for India in 1980-81.
