Major political parties prepare to spearhead May Day rallies

Several rallies have been organised around the country to mark International Workers Day or May Day.

A number of main political parties will be holding their May Day celebrations in the city of Colombo. The United People’s Freedom Alliance May Day rally spearheaded by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party will commence from the Nelum Pokuna theatre area.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party General Secretary, Minister Maithripala Sirisena stated that the rally will thereafter proceed to Campbell Park in Borella.

The United National Party’s May Day rally will be held in Ampara. The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna’s May Day rally will be held at the BRC grounds.

The rally will commence at the S.D.S. Jayasinghe grounds.

In the meantime, the May Day rally of the Democratic Front will be held at the Buddhadasa Grounds in Battaramulla under the auspices of the party leader Sarath Fonseka.

The rally is scheduled to commence at the Etul Kotte Junction.

Several trade unions will also conduct May Day celebrations in addition to the political parties.
