Manufacturers in troubled waters as CAA raids Dalugama factory

The Consumer Affairs Authority raided a factory that manufactured bottles of water unfit for consumption in Dalugama, Kelaniya on Monday.

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade stated that the raid was conducted based on a complaint made to the subject Minister Johnston Fernando.

CAA officers nabbed 12,000  of 1.5 litre-bottles of water unfit for consumption along with 25,000 bottles of 500ml of contaminated water and around 500,000 empty bottles which were intended for future use.

The Authority added that the total value of the seized goods is over Rs.5 million. The Ministry pointed out that it was confirmed that the bottled water has been contaminated with Kerosene Oil.

Accordingly, the Consumer Affairs Authority has taken steps to remove 25,000 bottles of water which had been distributed by the factory for retailing.

Meanwhile, the Internal Trade Ministry stated that legal action will be taken against the factory in question.
