The Tamil United Liberation Front has urged Canada to reconsider its decision to suspend technical assistance funding to the Commonwealth of Nations.

The request was made by the General Secretary of the TULF, V. Anandasangaree, in a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper.

In his letter, Anandasangaree notes that while he is neither challenging nor finding fault with the Canadian Prime Minister’s decision, he wishes to respectfully point out that this decision will certainly directly or indirectly have an adverse effect on the very same people with whom Harper sympathises with and those who had undergone untold hardships during the war that lasted more than a quarter of a century.

Noting that he is one who had always considered Canada not merely as a friendly country, but also as one that is very much interested in developing Sri Lanka, Anandasangaree also expressed his disappointment over Canada’s decision to boycott the 2013 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo.

He writes that the Tamil political leadership in Sri Lanka and the Tamil diaspora, failed to realise that CHOGM was the best forum in which the long-standing Sri Lanka ethnic issue could have been fully discussed and could have been a good opening to start negotiations.

As a prelude and to earn the co-operation of the parties concerned, Anandasangaree urges the Canadian Prime Minister to reconsider the decision to suspend contributions to the Commonwealth fund and proceed to help to solve problems in Sri Lanka.
