UK’s Minister of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, says that the UK has “real concerns in Sri Lanka, the Commonwealth’s Chair in Office.”
In an opinion article published on a conservative party website yesterday, Hugo Swire noted
“that there has been very little progress in investigating atrocities committed during Sri Lanka’s civil war.”
In the article, titled A Commonwealth for the 21st Century Swire noted that UK Prime Minister David Cameron has shown great leadership in securing an international inquiry into this through the UN Human Rights Council.
He adds that although the Commonwealth Charter adopted in 2012 is historic and enshrines the common values of the Commonwealth in a single document for the first time ever, its implementation has been patchy.
