Minister of Higher Education S.B.Dissanayake says that the attempts made by the former president to remain in power by amending the constitution, had failed.
The minister expressed this view while attending an event in Udu-Nuwara, Kandy.
Minister of Higher Education, S.B.Dissanayake shared these views;
“I recently saw the statement made by the Former President in Embilipitiya, She said that she had informed her children that she would not stay in power for no more than two terms. That is a blatant lie.
It was I who brought her back to the country. I was the General Secretary of her party. She attempted to amend the constitution and stay in power till her death.”
He added: “She did not have sufficient votes to amend the constitution. She couldn’t garner support from the opposition nor was she able to keep us together. The reason for this is very sad. She could not do anything for eleven years. If she was given a loop hole, she would have amended the constitution and remained in power till her death.”
“However, she did not have the support of the government nor the opposition. It was the 161 members of Parliament and the people of this country who wanted the saviour of our nation to be in office for sometime, it is not the Rajapaksas. That is why the constitution was amended,” said Minister of Higher Education S.B. Dissanayake.
