A meeting featuring the Southern and Western Provincial Council candidates of the Democratic Party was held in Colombo on Saturday.

The meeting which took place in Pitakotte was chaired by Leader of the Democratic Party Sarath Fonseka.

Subsequent to the  meeting , Leader of the Party Sarath Fonseka expressed the following views to the media.

Leader of Democratic Party, Sarath Fonseka expressed the following views:

“No matter how much the government boasts, and use the war for their gains and tell people with anguish that they are being taken to the electric chair – the government lost 250,000 votes at the polls. Due to the commitment of all in the party, we sent out a strong signal to the government. We are content with the election results. During the meeting today, we discussed our shortcomings and areas where we need to give more attention to. There are issues we need to be mindful of.”

He added: “Those who criticised us worked at our offices for a salary – some of them washed dishes. Some worked as peons. When we hand over money to travel in a three wheeler – they visit the press and then bring back the posters. Such persons had self-pro-claimed titles.

The person who used the three-wheeler to go to the printing press to bring back the poster identified himself as the media spokesperson.  Such persons may be exist in other parties as well. The problem here is that when someone leaves our party, everyone talks about it. This however, did not adversely affect us during the election.”
