The Chairman of the Hakmana Multi Purpose Co-operative Society H.W. Premarathna who was arrested on charges of assaulting an employee was released on bail after he was produced before the Deiyanadara Acting Magistrate.

A number of employees and members attached to various co-orparative socieites protested against the action of the Chairman of the Hakmana Multi Purpose Co-operative Society during the last few days.

They charged that the chairman and the board of directors were engaged in corrupt activities.

Furthermore, the annual general meeting to appoint a new board of directors to the society which was scheduled yesterday, April 04, was postponed on a court order.

The order was obtained by a group of persons claiming that the annual general meeting was conducted by a group of individuals – unfit to hold such a positions.

Meanwhile, the employee who was assaulted by the Chairman of the Hakmana Multi Purpose Co-operative Society on Saturday morning was admitted to the Gangodawila Provincial Hospital.

The Chairman of the Hakmana Multi Purpose Co-operative Society was taken into custody on Saturday evening. He was then produced before the acting magistrate of the Deiyandara Magistrate and was released on a surety bail of Rs.50, 000.

Meanwhile, employees and members of the co-operative society organised a protest march against the courrpt activities of the chairman and the board of directors, from the Hakamana Temple on Saturday morning.

Attempts were made by the protesters to enter the premises of the Co-operative Society.  However, the police intervened and brought the situation under control.

Thereafter, the group of individuals staged a protest oppsite the Co-operative Society
