Concern over death of fish in Asgiriya

A large number of fish in the Aththanugalu Oya in Asgiriya have died.Our correspondent stated that this situation arose on Wednesday morning.

Residents in Asgiriya stated that they noticed a change in the colour of the water early Wednesday morning. Later they observed that a  large number of fish had perished.

When a News1st crew visited the area we witnessed that fish as big as three-feet in length, had died.

Residents say the water had turned black since early Wednesday morning and they caught fish that were 3 or 4 feet long. Residents also say that fish have been dying since morning.

Medical experts opine that it is unwise to consume fish when they are unaware of the cause of death. Additional MOH of Gampaha District, R.R. Rajapaksa speaking on the situation said:

“Why are fish dying in this way? Is it because of poison? The cause has not been revealed as yet. Therefore it is unwise to consume these fish. I ask that the people refrain from cooking and eating these fish.”
