Fonseka’s party cancels election rallies due to alleged threats

The Democratic Party has decided to cancel election rallies that were planned for the next few days in the Hambantota district, due to threats allegedly levelled against the party and its candidates .

Speaking on this Leader of Democratic Party, Sarath Fonseka said:

“We had planned to hold twelve more meetings in the next few days. Everything was planned for the four electorates. Out of the twelve, we had planned to hold nine before today. The remaining three were to be held tomorrow and the day after. However, we did not get legal permission for the meetings.”

He added: ” In several instances we went to Hambantota. We received death threats, they threatened that we would be shot dead and that the stage would be burned. We received many death threats.. we were also told that our contestants and our allies would be attacked and their homes would be destroyed”
