Lankan elected to top position in World Customs Organisation

Director of the Department of customs, Tharaka Senevirathne, was unanimously elected as the chairperson of the Harmonized System Committee of World Customs Organization.

This appointment has been proposed by the representatives of the European Union and seconded by the representatives of Australia, at its session held in Brussels, Belgium. This is the first time an Asian has been appointed for this position.

Customs Media Spokesperson Leslie Gamini said that 179 countries took part in this session.

Tharaka Senevirathne is to arrive in the country today.
