Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, the Special Envoy of the President on Human Rights, briefed the Latin American Regional Group of UN Human Rights Council Members and observer countries on Tuesday on the current status of the post armed conflict reconciliation and reconstruction initiatives of the Government of Sri Lanka.

Minister Samarasinghe informed the gathering that in view of the impressive progress achieved by Sri Lanka in several spheres of activity, the appropriateness of current initiatives by some countries to propose international intervention by way of inquiry mechanisms is questionable.

The Minister explained to the assembled heads of mission at the meeting held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, that such a measure was both intrusive and unnecessary.

Ambassador Ravinatha Aryasinha, Sri Lanka’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, was also present at the meeting.
