Chairman of the National Selection Committee, Sanath Jayasuriya says that he never made a verbal promise to the national team that they would receive a percentage of the guarantee and participation fee paid by the International Cricket Council.

However,  he notes that the cricketers request should be addressed in some manner .

Although the central player contracts renewals for Sri Lanka Cricket were to be signed by February 28, the 17 cricketers who have received central player contracts have not signed as yet.

The decision not to sign, follows the decision taken by SLC not to pay cricketers a percentage of the guarantee and participation fee paid by the ICC.

However, in a letter addressed to the President of SLC, the national team notes that they had received a verbal promise from the Chairman of the National Selection Committee, Sanath Jayasuriya, that they would receive such a payment.

The letter, which has been signed by test and ODI captain Angelo Matthews and T20 captain Dinesh Chandimal, notes that the players have faith that this promise will be carried out.

However, Chairman of the National Selection Committee, Sanath Jayasuriya says that he made no such promise adding that he only intervened to resolve the problem.

Speaking to us Sanath Jayasuriya said,

” I thought that there should be discussions and that they should receive some compensation. Cricketers only play for a short while. They cannot play forever. So, Sri Lanka Cricket needs to think about how they will recompense them. I cannot promise that a certain amount will be given. I am not the person who makes the decisions.”
