Department for Registration of Persons said that the current National Identity Card will be valid until the new electronic identity card is issued.

The Commissioner of the Department, R. M. S. Sarath Kumara said that the new bilingual identity card will be issued within this month.

He added that the new ID will be issued for new applicants and others who already have a National Identity card  need not apply for a new one.
