Rumours abound in recent days that Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga would abandon the UNP and crossover to the government.
Amaratunga who returned to the country the day before yesterday, following the conclusion of a state visit abroad where he accompanied the President, rejected these rumours and said he had not decided to join the government.
These are some of the views that were expressed on the matter on Sunday:
UPFA General Secretary, Minister Susil Premajayantha said; “John Amaratunga is the Chief Opposition Whip, this is not a minor position. He is the organiser for the sixty odd MPs from the UNP and the organiser for the TNA and others in the opposition. Not only is he one of the seniormost politicians in the UNP, having served for 30 years, he is also the person who is appointed Acting Opposition Leader when Ranil Wickremesinghe goes abroad. But he has understood now that the President’s programme is correct. Look at how much acclaim he has won abroad. Thereby, while he was going on a pilgrimage to Bethlehem he visited three countries with the President. This is a good example for politics.”
Former UNP Minister, Minister Gamini Lokuge shared these views; “The United National Party is disgusted by its own party. When John Amaratunge visited the Middle East with the President he wondered why he should remain in the United National Party, he also thought he should work with the President. Today, I invite all of the people from the UNP branch committees in this area to join with us and campaign for the elections.”
