The tense situation which erupted opposite the Prime Minister’s Office has been brought under control and Flower Road has now reopened, according to our correspondent in the area.

The protest march was staged demanding that Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne stes down from the position of Minister of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs.

According to our correspondent, the tense situation arose when the protesters attempted to enter the premises of the PM’s office by force.

Shalitha Perera, propaganda secretary of the Sinhala Ravaya Organisation, said that the march was carried out to voice their protest against the incident where PM Jayarartne publicly disrespected the Maha Sangha. They demanded that the Prime Minister make a public apology to the Maha Sangha.
