The Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued a warrant on Monday for the arrest of the first defendant in the case pertaining to the killing of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, ordering that the defendant be produced in court thereafter.

The warrant was issued since the first defendant in the case was not present in court on Monday.

While the third defendant in the case was also absent from court on Monday, defence lawyers attributed his absence to ill health.

The 11th defendant in this case, MP Duminda Silva was present in court today. Further hearings of the case have been postponed to February 6.

Sister of Late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra, Swarna Gunaratne expressed her view on the case, “On behalf of Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra’s family in Canada what I have to say is that in this country where the Chief Justice was sent home within 24 hours, we hope that we too will receive justice. It has not struck our minds as yet that we will receive justice.”

Daughter of Late Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra Hirunika Premachandra also commented on this, “What more can I say. What I need to say has been said. regardless of the justice of the courts  -we are hoping that someday the people will give us justice.”

Meanwhile,   Defence Counsel, Hemantha Warnakulasuriya PC said, “The High Court granted permission for MP Duminda Silva to travel overseas. So from today for another three weeks he has been granted permission by the High Court to travel overseas for a re-examination of his surgery and to be treated after his medical reports have been examined.”
