Fifty nine Sri Lankan fishermen in Indian custody have been remanded once again till January 3.

According to The Hindu newspaper, the Indian Coast Guard had apprehended the Sri Lankan fishermen in November while they were fishing off the coast of Kanyakumari.

The fishermen are currently being detained at the Puzhal Central Prison Complex located in close proximity to Chennai.

Two hundred and thirteen (213) Sri Lankan fishermen and 40 Sri Lankan vessels are currently in the custody of Indian officials.The Ministry of Fisheries noted that 170 fishermen have been detained in Tamil Nadu while the rest have been detained in Andra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, 227 Indian fishermen who violated the Sri Lankan maritime boundary are in Sri Lankan custody.
