An elephant calf was found dead in the reserve close to the Kasan Tank, which is located in close proximity to the Mahaweli B -Zone, in the Maithrigama village, Polonnaruwa.
Our correspondent said that the elephant calf was one day old.
Residents say that due to the deforestation of the Kasan Reserve which is an area where elephants inhabit the village, has become a place where female elephants give birth.
Meanwhile, another wild elephant was found with gun shot wounds in the Elahera Reserve. Steps were taken to provide medical treatment to the injured elephant last night.
Wild Life officials stated that the elephant had sustained gun shot injuries on its left foreleg about one and a half weeks ago. As a result the said elephant had been roaming in the area with great difficulty.
