United People’s Freedom Alliance Southern Provincial Councillor, Ajith Prasanna and a group of people are engaging in a hunger strike calling for Geetha Kumarasinghe to be removed from the position of Benthara  Elpitiya Electorate, Organiser.

However,  Geetha Kumarasinghe is of the view that the request made by the public from her to accept the chief ministerial candidacy is the reason for the hunger strike.

A heated situation took place at the Benthara Elpitiya Divisional Development Committee meeting held on Sunday.

The meeting had to be halted midway, following which UPFA Southern Provincial Councillor Ajith Prasanna commenced a hunger strike.

As of Monday, four members of the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha have joined the fast. Ajith Prasanna , UPFA Southern Provincial Councillor made these comments,

“Geetha Kumarasighe’s outburst was not directed at me alone. We are no longer prepared to accept her as the Organiser of the Bentara Elpitiya Electorate. Remove Geetha Kumarasinghe from this position. I would like to ask that artists or sports personalities not be named as candidates merely for popularity as this makes a mess of politics.”

Incidentally, joining the Press Release Programme on Sirasa TV this morning, Geetha Kumarasinghe shared these views:

In truth I see this as a huge conspiracy. This commenced because the people asked me to contest for the Provincial Council and also asked me to contest for the post of chief minister. The Provincial Councillor by the name of Ajith Prasanna has scolded me in filth and told me not to attend the development committee meeting. If I attended the meeting for three years,  then why is there a sudden law? Why was an invitation sent to me? Why was a separate chair allocated for me with my name mentioned on it?”

When she was asked the questions  “What are the future plans for your political career? Will you contest for the Chief Ministerial Position?”

Geetha Kumarasinghe replied “Definitely.”

When Newsfirst made inquires from the UPFA General Secretary Minister Susil Premajayantha, he said that problems cannot be solved by sitting on the floor.

He noted that if something unfair has taken place, then a complaint should be made to the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. The Minister stated that if a complaint is lodged, then an internal inquiry can be conducted and disciplinary action can be taken.
