Today, the world marks Human Rights Day.

So what are these human rights that world speaks of so passionately?

Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status.

We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. These rights are all interrelated, interdependent, indivisible and inviolable.

Now, this year’s theme for World Human Rights Day is “working for your rights” but with the emphasis on the future and identifying the challenges that lie ahead.

The UN General Assembly proclaimed December 10 as Human Rights Day in 1950, to bring to the attention ‘of the peoples of the world’ the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as the common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.

Human Rights Day 2013 is of special significance as it ends the year-long commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

An engaging day-long event was held on December 5 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

The event featured a series of conversations on a variety of human rights issues, including human rights defenders, equality and participation in economic and political life, the World Wide Web and the free flow of information, and human rights mechanisms.

Key participants included the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.

World Human Rights Day is a monument to all the great leaders throughout time who has fought, and who continue fighting for a world of equality where no man will be discriminated by the colour of their skin, caste, religion or nationality.
