Today marks International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Today is the International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

The theme for 2013 is  Break barriers, open door; find inclusive society and development for all.

According to the United Nations, the total number of persons with disabilities across the globe adds up to 1 billion. Issuing an official statement, the Secretary General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon stated that we must remove all barriers that affect the inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in society through changing attitudes that fuel stigma and institutionalize discrimination.

Meanwhile, the ceremony marking the International day for Disabled Persons in Sri Lanka is scheduled to take place in Mahiyangana under the auspices of the speaker of the parliament Chamal Rajapaksa.

The national ceremony will take place on December 6 under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa in Wellawaya. The Minister of Social Services, Felix Perera said that a number of ceremonies are due to take place for disabled persons countrywide
