COLOMBO (News 1st); The Ministry of Environment has decided to obtain the assistance of veterinary officers attached to Sri Lanka’s Tri-Forces to ensure the continuation of emergency wildlife treatment services amid ongoing trade union action by wildlife veterinary officers.

The Ministry said the decision was taken after wildlife veterinarians began a work-to-rule campaign, which has created practical difficulties in providing emergency treatment services for injured and vulnerable wild animals outside normal working hours, including during weekends and public holidays.

The trade union action by wildlife veterinary officers is reportedly based on several longstanding issues that have remained unresolved for more than a decade.

Among the key demands put forward by the officers are the creation of five Grade I positions within the service, the provision of an additional allowance for extended working hours, and the establishment of a dedicated supporting staff structure.

The Ministry stated that discussions have been ongoing regarding these concerns and emphasized that efforts have been made to address the demands raised by wildlife veterinary officers.
