Government to Fast Track Judicial Infrastructure Development

COLOMBO (News 1st) - President Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the government's goal is to establish a judicial system that delivers justice to the public without unnecessary delays.

He made these remarks during a progress review of projects under the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, as well as a pre-budget discussion for the 2027 Budget, held at the Presidential Secretariat.

During the meeting, the President stressed the need to accelerate the development of the infrastructure of the judicial system.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the progress of construction work at the Colombo High Court Complex, the Ministry of Justice building, the Hulfsdorp Court Complex, and new court complexes in Galle, Matale, Kanthale, and several other locations.

Attention was also given to the judges' official housing project, which was suspended midway due to the 2022 economic crisis.

The meeting further discussed improving the efficiency of the Department of the Legal Draftsman by strengthening its human resources and upgrading technological facilities.

Special attention was also paid to the Government Analyst's Department, including plans to increase the number of forensic reports issued each month to 9,000.

The President instructed the relevant authorities to provide suitable facilities to relocate the Government Analyst's Department to an appropriate location.

Discussions also covered improving facilities and welfare for prison officers.

The President's Media Division added that attention was given to the possibility of integrating rehabilitation programmes currently carried out by several institutions, including the Police, the Ministry of Health, and the Department of Social Services, under a single coordinating authority.
