Former IGP C. D. Wickramaratne To Be Laid To Rest With Full Police Honours Today

COLOMBO (News 1st) - The final rites of former Inspector General of Police C. D. Wickramaratne, who died from a gunshot wound, will be held with full police honours this afternoon at the Borella Cemetery.

His remains are currently lying in state at a private funeral parlour in Borella for the public to pay their last respects.

Former Presidents, politicians, Government officials, and many others visited the funeral parlour to pay their final respects.

C. D. Wickramaratne, who served as Sri Lanka's 35th Inspector General of Police, died last Friday (17) after sustaining a gunshot wound at his residence in Thalahena.

He was 63 years old at the time of his death.

Wickramaratne joined the Sri Lanka Police in 1986 as a Probationary Assistant Superintendent of Police and was a graduate of both the University of Colombo and the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University.

Wickramaratne served as the Acting Inspector General of Police for more than a year from April 28, 2019.

He was appointed as the Inspector General of Police on November 28, 2020, and retired from the post on November 27, 2023, following several service extensions.
