COLOMBO (News 1st); Colombo Port has recorded a 20 percent increase in operational revenue compared to April last year, as shifting global shipping patterns drive more activity towards Sri Lanka’s main maritime gateway.
Deputy Minister of Ports and Aviation Ruwan Kodituwakku stated that the growth is largely attributed to Colombo’s rising role as a transshipment hub, particularly in the wake of ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The disruptions faced by several ports in that region have redirected shipping traffic, with Colombo emerging as a key alternative centre for cargo handling.
He explained that congestion and operational constraints in Middle Eastern ports have forced shipping lines to reroute transshipment activities, resulting in a significant inflow of cargo through Colombo Port.
This has directly contributed to a surge in both operational capacity utilisation and revenue generation.
According to the Deputy Minister, Colombo’s transshipment volumes, already a dominant component of port operations, have seen a notable expansion, with overall activity rising by approximately 20 percent when compared not only to April 2025 but also to the preceding month of March. He expressed confidence that the upward trend would continue in the coming months, given that tensions in the Middle East show no immediate signs of easing.
Transshipment accounts for around 80 percent of operations at Colombo Port, where cargo is transferred from one vessel to another for onward journeys. The recent increase underscores the port’s strategic importance in regional and global trade routes, particularly during periods of geopolitical instability.
