COLOMBO (News 1st): Marking a new chapter in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry, a historic Memorandum of Understanding was signed today (May 13) between the Maharaja Media Network and Macau’s state broadcaster, TDM Media (Teledifusão de Macau).
The partnership primarily aims to boost tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka from China and Macau through enhanced media cooperation.
The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Administration Council Meeting, currently being held in Macau.
On behalf of the Maharaja Media Network, the agreement was signed by Chevaan Daniel, Group Director of the Maharaja Media Network. TDM Macau was represented by Lorman Lo Song Man, Chairman of the Executive Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of TDM – Teledifusão de Macau, S.A.
Suranga Jayalath, Group Director (Legal) of the Capital Maharaja Group was also present at the signing.
"This partnership can play a vital role in further enhancing tourism into Sri Lanka from Macau and China. We hope that by communicating to this audience directly, we can showcase our island to those who might then want to visit beautiful Sri Lanka", noted Chevaan Daniel, Group Director of CMG, the parent company of Maharaja Media.
The agreement is seen as a historic milestone in expanding cooperation between two leading media institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, while also reflecting the growing importance of cultural, people-to-people and media ties between Sri Lanka and Macau.
TDM – Teledifusão de Macau, S.A. is Macau’s public broadcasting service, operating across television, radio and multimedia platforms. It provides news, information, sports, entertainment and diversified programming to audiences in Macau and around the world.
TDM operates five television channels, including TDM Ou Mun, the Portuguese television channel Canal Macau, TDM Info, TDM Sport, and TDM Entertainment, along with the satellite TV channel Ou Mun-Macau, which reaches audiences across the Asia-Pacific region and parts of Africa.
Under this agreement, the Maharaja Media Network will take steps to directly showcase Sri Lanka’s beauty and cultural identity to audiences in China and Macau.
A key objective of the initiative is to attract high-end Chinese tourists to Sri Lanka, particularly through Macau as a strategic gateway.
As active members of the Asia-Pacific broadcasting community, both institutions are expected to use this partnership to further strengthen media ties, enhance mutual understanding, and open new opportunities for collaboration across the region.
The signing of the MoU in Macau, during a major ABU gathering, also underscores the role of regional media institutions in deepening cooperation at a time when audiences are increasingly connected through television, radio, digital platforms and social media.
The Maharaja Media Network said the agreement represents not only an institutional partnership, but also a shared commitment to using media as a force for dialogue, friendship and regional cooperation.
