Media mogul and philanthropist Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and a pioneer of 24-hour television news, has passed away at the age of 87.

Turner launched Cable News Network as the first dedicated rolling news channel, in 1980, which soon became a central part of the media landscape.

Born in Ohio and later based in Atlanta, Turner, widely known as “The Mouth of the South” for his outspoken personality, built a vast media empire that included the first cable superstation, as well as popular movie and cartoon channels.

He also owned major professional sports franchises, including the Atlanta Braves.

Beyond media, Turner was an internationally recognised yachtsman, a philanthropist who founded the United Nations Foundation, and a prominent activist advocating for the global elimination of nuclear weapons.

He was also a leading conservationist and one of the largest private landowners in the United States.
